We sat down with Ubisoft Senior Producer on Ruse, Mathieu Girard, and Project Co-ordinator Thomas Leroux-Hugon to discuss Ruse, the upcoming World War II RTS from Eugen Systems. Technophobes should probably skip through question three, or check out our preview for a gentler description.
TVG: Ruse’s vast, open battlefields are similar in style to a Total War game, while the camera can zoom stratospherically above the action seamlessly until the battlefield appears almost like a board game, which reminded me a lot of Supreme Commander or Total Annihilation. Has the development team been influenced by games like that at all?
Mathieu Girard: I guess every strategy game was somehow a small inspiration, but not one in particular. Lots of board games and movies about espionage and that sort of thing were an influence, but there’s not one single inspiration.
That’s really what was difficult in making this game, which was that we had to invent stuff and there were no clear examples of what we needed to do, so we had to pick parts from poker, parts from board games, and parts from videogames. Sometimes it was more like trial and error when we were testing stuff to make sure that it’s fun and it works, and to get the final results.
Thomas Leroux-Hugon: Another consequence of that is that we have a lot of competitors in terms of real-time strategy games, and the angle we wanted to take with it was using Ruses as an element of strategy.
TVG: You mentioned that Ruse is leading on the PC, but I noticed you were using the Xbox 360 pad on a PC rig during our demonstration. Does this mean we can expect a particularly console friendly interface and control layout?
MG: It’s part of the key features of the game, which is that it’s very simple to use the program but it’s still very deep in terms of the possibilities you have. It’s not about the complexity of the control and how many clicks you have to do; it’s really about the decisions you want to make and what the game is going to give you in terms of information.
The creative vision from the beginning was the perception of deceiving the enemy – what you want them to believe and what you want them to see in terms of false information – and we focused less on the interface. I guess the interface was something that emerged naturally. We wanted an immersive game; we wanted a natural game, and we wanted to show strategy decisions. For example, we have these big arrows that show where armies are attacking, so it emerged quite naturally actually.
TL: Another point is that with the Iris engine you can zoom in and out. The zoom itself gives a real interface that at one time gives you a high scale balance of power and then you can zoom-in to see the precise situation of one infantry unit and target him. That’s why the zoom is so important apart from being good looking, because every level makes sense in terms of gameplay.
TVG: Speaking of the kind of zoom Ruse employs over such large scales, what sort of technological breakthroughs have Eugen Systems (Ruse’s developer) made that enable them to depict these sorts of vast, streaming environments, because we’ve never seen anything quite like it?
MG: It’s a breakthrough around streaming data that’s reconstructed dynamically across the geometry on-screen, so what you see in an image is actually the construction of something virtual – a huge database of assets, of textures, and of 3D modelling.

The rumors were correct, LittleBigPlanet is heading to PSP and it’ll be here before the end of the year. Announced at today’s Destination PlayStation retailer event, the PSP version will be developed “in conjunction” with Media Molecule and will offer a similar experience to the PS3 version with players being able to play, create and share on the go. We’re promised plenty of new content, such as levels, exclusive to the PSP version this fall.
We’ll be very surprised if we don’t see any cross-platform interactivity, but details are very thin on the ground. We’ll keep you updated as more information is revealed.

Classic Game Room HD – TRANSFORMERS 2 for Wii review
Classic Game Room HD reviews TRANSFORMERS REVENGE OF THE FALLEN for Nintendo Wii. It’s like the Bumblebee of Transformers video games. It should just transform into a car and drive itself off a cliff. Less than meets the eye kids, less than meets the eye. Buy or rent the AWESOME Transformers Revenge of the Fallen for Xbox 360 or PS3 and avoid this one. In an odd twist of fate (even odder than robots adopting the form of cars and school busses) the Transformers 2 video game has numerous versions… the Xbox 360 and PS3 version, two Nintendo DS versions and this mess on the Nintendo Wii. Sloppy controls, poor graphics and lackluster gameplay make this Transformers game the one to miss. This CGRHD review of Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen for Wii has gameplay footage from Transformers 2 on Wii showing the video game being played. Play Autobot and Decepticon, both (you can’t choose like you can in the 360 version) and play through a variety of mission types where the camera angles add confusion to what could have otherwise been a straight forward punch and shoot brawler.

Prototype (stylized as “[PROTOTYPE]“) is an upcoming action game in development by Radical Entertainment and based on an original IP developed in-house. The game is due to be released in North America on June 9, 2009, in Oceania on June 10 and in Europe on June 12. The game will be compatable on with Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 platforms. Prototype was released a day early in Australia.
The game is set in New York City as a virus infects people and government military try to defend against it. The protagonist of the story is named Alex Mercer, who has enemy-absorbing and shapeshifting powers. He can take memories, experiences, biomass and physical forms of the enemies through absorption. Alex can also shapeshift into more specialized forms for attack, defense or sensory enhancement. All of these together are intended to give players multiple ways to complete their objectives. Parallel to the game’s storyline is the ability to play the game as a sandbox-style video game giving the player free roam of New York City.
The plot of Prototype centers on a large conspiracy regarding an unnamed mutagenic virus currently infecting New York City. The effects of the virus have been witnessed before in the town of Hope, Idaho in 1969. After being released in Penn Station in New York, the virus spreads through the city, necessitating at first subtle government actions to combat it, then martial law and evacuation. Alex wakes up with amnesia in a morgue under the scalpels of two HAZMAT-suited scientists and escapes dazed into the city. He then begins to come to terms with his powers (including the ability to absorb memories – which is crucial to piecing together his own), and makes contact with his sister, Dana Mercer. Dana assists him in finding members of the conspiracy, which include government officials, military personnel and employees of bio-engineering firm GENTEK, where it is revealed Alex was previously employed.
Alex encounters several characters, not all of which have currently been revealed. His primary opponent is Captain Cross (The Specialist), leader of the Blackwatch special forces branch of the US military. Other characters include Karen Parker, a researcher at GENTEK and Alex’s former girlfriend, Dr. McMullen, head of GENTEK, and Dr Ragland, a pathologist that assists Alex and studies the infected.
As Alex adds more and more nodes to the Web of Intrigue (by absorbing people’s minds), the virus begins to spread further and further through New York, and the military is forced to step up operations in order to prevent spreading further. The city is evacuated, quarantined and placed under martial law as the military moves in with a full-scale lockdown with tanks, infantry and air support. The virus grows stronger and stronger, mutating citizens of New York into various forms. As the conflict begins to consume the city Alex’s actions will play a part in deciding the course of the battle and perhaps the ultimate victor. As the game features non-linear sandbox play, the player is free to explore the city with Alex’s superhuman agility through the course of the game.

Terminator Salvation is a third-person shooter action video game, released on May 19, 2009 to coincide with the release of the film the same name on the same week. It is developed by the Halcyon Company’s gaming subsidiary, Halcyon Games, along with GRIN and published by Equity Games and Evolved Games. The game was released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, mobile, and iPhone OS. The game takes approximately four hours to complete and has no extra features other than the change in difficulty levels. The “cutscenes” are in-game renders with little to no substance to them, and do little to drive the story. All of the main information is presented through the musings of the protagonist’s squad and the radio calls they periodically make.
Set in 2016 in Los Angeles, it is an interquel that takes place between the events of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation and follows Common’s Barnes character, though players will assume the control of John Connor. However, Christian Bale refused to lend his voice and likeness for the game. Rose McGowan will be in the game as well, voicing the game-exclusive character Angie Salter, who is an ex-high school teacher. On the other hand, Common and Moon Bloodgood are voicing their own characters from the film (Barnes and Blair, respectively).
Terminator Salvation is a third person shooter where the player needs to “constantly move, flank, cover and utilize their squad to progress.” The player must battle Skynet enemies from the upcoming film as well as new enemies specifically designed for the game.
The game features a campaign that can be played alone or cooperatively with one other local player via split-screen.
The story centers around a 30 year old John Conner who tries to rescue some of his comrades from the Skynet, an advanced robotic civilization, in the year 2016.
The game was first announced on November 15, 2007 when the Halcyon Company also announced the formation of Halcyon Games, the video game arm of the studio. It had already been in development for several months at GRIN and Halcyon Games, long before filming took place. Peter Levin, a former Disney executive, will head up Halcyon Games as acting CEO. The CEO revealed that Halcyon decided to develop the game internally rather than contract another studio to create the game.
Although a multiplayer mode was originally planned it was decidedly dropped to allow the game to be released on schedule. With Halcyon developments’ VP Cos Lazouras stating “It is my opinion to do less better, than more but mediocre. We did get local co-op in which is incredibly cool.”

Classic Game Room HD – CSI: DEADLY INTENT for Xbox 360 review
Classic Game Room HD reviews CSI: DEADLY INTENT for Xbox 360. Also available for PC, Wii and Nintendo DS. CGR prefers the Nintendo DS version to the Xbox 360 version, but this may still be worth a rent or budget purchase for Xbox 360 owners who are fans of CSI and mystery “whodunnit” crime solving games. Search crime scenes for clues, assemble evidence, get arrest warrants and interrogate subjects. The game is terrible in HD and has terribly cheesy visuals and sub-par acting but does have some interesting crims solving segments. It’s a better game on Nintendo DS but still playable on 360. This CGR review has gameplay from CSI Deadly Intent on Xbox 360 showing game play in action in this police detective drama video game based on the CSI television show.

If Castlevania: Lords of Shadow — announced today during Konami’s E3 press conference — seems … familiar, it should. The game was actually announced at last year’s E3 — by Konami — as Lords of Shadow, minus the Castlevania. But, as far as we can tell by comparing what we saw today versus a year ago, that’s the only difference.
Lords of Shadow was a gothic action-adventure game starring a character named Gabriel, who just so happened to wield a whip — iconic weapon of Castlevania heroes — that emerged from a crucifix. Castlevania: Lord of Shadows is — in keeping with the series — a gothic adventure, starring a crucifix/whip-wielding character named Gabriel (who, like the rest of the game, looks exactly as he did last year). Both years’ trailers even feature the same giant, stone golem boss character. Oh, and look amazing. Only now, Kojima Productions is steering MercurySteam along the development path.
2009, where everything old is new again — and carrying the Castlevania name. Check out the game as it appeared a year ago in trailer form after the break
